#EGX2018 Hands-On: SoulCalibur 6 Preview
SoulCalibur VI is nearly upon us, but I had to get an early taste of what’s to come with the EGX demo. SoulCalibur V released in 2012 and despite me being a fan of the series since it was known as Soul Blade on the PS1, the last release for whatever reason didn’t click with me. But with all the trailers that has been released so far, my excitement for the latest entry was building up with each one, despite being somewhat deliberately cautious.
So I sat down ready to play the demo hoping that it would truly spark my enthusiasm for the series and I’m glad to report that it most certainly did. I only played three matches against my friend as I didn’t want to hog the demo too much, but considering that my friend isn’t really a fan of the fighting genre, it says quite a lot that he too also enjoyed his experience with the demo.
During my three matches I played as Maxi, Geralt of Rivia (from The Witcher series) and Zasalamel, each character offering something a little different. Maxi was as quick as a hiccup with his nunchuck combos, Geralt combined ranged attacks with his sword and mystical powers, while Zasalamel offered a good balance of strength and speed.
The many gameplay trailers that we’ve seen so far, don’t quite do this game justice to how good it looks and you can’t really get a good feel of its fantastic gameplay until you’ve played it yourself. But in a nutshell, this played even better then I hoped it would. Combos were quite easy to pull-off, yet there a deep combat system that will challenge even those more hardcore players, and the gameplay itself was fast, yet slick. It was quite simply a joy to play, I only wish I had more time with the demo.
Thankfully we don’t have too long to wait until SoulCalibur VI releases, but if my experience at EGX is anything to go by, this could very well be the best game in the series yet! SoulCalibur VI will release for PC, PS4 and Xbox One on October 19th.
