Yuke’s 20-Year Partnership as WWE Videogame Developer Ends
Yuke’s are one of the longest standing developers of a single license videogame in the modern era. Since 1999 on the original PlayStation with WWE Smackdown, they have developed a seemingly endless line of WWE licensed videogames, however that time has come to an end, as confirmed via the official WWE 2K Instagram account.
While Yuke’s will still be offering a helping hand, the development duties now belong to Visual Concepts, who have been working alongside Yuke’s ever since the WWE license was given to 2K Games. 2K Games released a statement announcing the news:
“As we’ve continued to invest in the WWE 2K franchise, we’ve seen the Visual Concepts team display incredible passion, talent and commitment to the future of the series. We thank Yuke’s for their years of partnership and are excited to see what the Visual Concepts team brings to the franchise moving forward.”
As a fan of Yuke’s ever since they developed their very first WWE game, it will be interesting to see how the franchise may or may not change following WWE 2K20. With the series still running on the same game engine for the foreseeable future, I won’t expect miracles or anything drastic, but this is a series that’s been in need of a serious refresh for a few years now. Will they tweak the engine and/or introduce some fun new modes and bring back certain match-types? Only time will tell.
Interestingly, Yuke’s are also currently working on another wrestling title outside of the WWE, though we don’t know what that is at this time. There’s a chance that it could be NJPW related, but given that they already have a deal with the Fire Pro Wrestling franchise, my money will be on Yuke’s are working on an AEW game, but again, only time will tell.
Are you excited to see what the future holds for WWE games as well as that project Yuke’s are working on? Let us know across our social media channels. WWE 2K20 will release for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One on October 22nd.
