Beta Impressions: Resident Evil Spin-Off, Project Resistance Beta Fails to Impress

Over the weekend, some of us (including myself) were selected to take part in the closed beta for Project Resistance, the asymmetrical multiplayer spin-off for the Resident Evil franchise.  It’s not the first time that we’ve had a multiplayer spin-off in the series, because we’ve had the likes of Outbreak on the PS2, Operation: Raccoon City on last-gen systems as well as more recently, the abysmal Umbrella Corps.

Admittedly, I’m a big fan of the Resident Evil series and I’m always open to something new and I know that this is just a beta and a lot can change, but judging from my first impressions, I am not impressed with Project Resistance.  I can appreciate that playing as the Mastermind can be fun, placing enemies, traps and taking control of Mr X for a brief time; however it’s far less fun playing as the Survivors.  The game just feels way too unbalanced in the favour of the Mastermind during this beta phase, so hopefully this is something that can be fixed for when the full game releases next year.

Plus, I must take into account that when playing as the Survivors, I am playing with randoms and it wasn’t as easy co-ordinating as a team, unlike if I was playing with friends.  Additionally, when the full game releases, we will likely have new maps, enemies and toys to play with.  So it is worth keeping in mind that this is a very restricted beta and the optimist in me likes to think that improvements will be made by the time this game releases and beyond.

You can hear my impressions and check out some gameplay from my beta participation below.  Project Resistance will release for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One sometime in 2020.  Have you played the beta?  Let us know your thoughts across our social media channels.
