Yoshinori Ono reveals details about Super Street Fighter IV 3DS

When the Nintendo 3DS was revealed at E3, we also got a glimpse at many of the studios that would provide third-party support. One of those was Capcom and later on, many sites revealed possible games that we could see at either the launch day of the 3DS or soon afterward. Again Capcom appeared with only a couple but one name was particularly worth noticing; Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition.

While the name isn’t final, for now it’s stuck. And while we’ve seen a few of the screenshots, not much else has been revealed about it. But now thanks to the people at Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu, we know a little bit more.

Turns out Capcom had thought about bringing SSFIV to the DS and PSP, but felt each portable system wouldn’t be able to handle a satisfactory version of the game. Then the Nintendo 3DS was announced: “we decided that we could produce Street Fighter on that system well enough that everything fun about the series would shine through. There was also the fact that we could use all of its network abilities to help gamers communicate with each other.”

Ono sees the 3DS Super Street Fighter IV port has having no corners cut, with all 35 characters to be included! And of course the 3D will be implemented but apparently it won’t change the gameplay at all and instead Capcom seem to be concentrating on using the 3D in ways that it will affect the visuals: “We’re in the midst of a trial-and-error process, throwing ideas around the development team for things that’d be neat to work with in 3D. The system itself is still purely SSFIV — we’re thinking about ways 3D can be used in the visuals instead.”

And for the hardcore that are worrying their beloved SSFIV will be dumbed down? “We don’t have any intention of pandering to children here. We’d rather make a game that a kid wants to strive to become better at. Of course, we’d like to make it a little more accessible since it’s not on a home console, but we’re not thinking about kids so much as people who stopped playing SF after the Super NES version…We have no intention of rebalancing the strength of the moves.” So there you go, Ryu, Sagat and Rufus will still be top tier while Dan and Sakura will still be the worst of the worst.

With that said however, Ono is looking at ways to incorporate all the features the Nintendo 3DS offers to somehow be of use in SSFIV 3DS: “We are conducting trials, though, to see how we can use the bottom screen and Slide Pad. Maybe we could use the screen to simulate multiple button presses and the pad for special moves, or the like.”

Now the question that Street Fighter fans want to know the most; when will it be released? Well with the Nintendo 3DS itself not having a release date as of this writing, that means SSFIV 3DS release date is unknown. However, Ono hopes that Capcom will have timing on their side: “We don’t know exactly when yet, but I would like to see it out while the original version is still popular in arcades,” he said. “Releasing a simple upgrade to arcades would whittle down our audience, but getting the game out on lots of different platforms will hopefully help expand it instead.”

It’s quite interesting to hear how the Capcom felt the PSP wouldn’t be able to do a portable SSFIV justice, considering how powerful the machine is. This means the 3DS must be one hell of a nifty powerful handheld. But one will think that if the PSP 2 is ever announced if Capcom will port one of their fighting games – regardless if it’s SSFIV or not – onto the handheld system.

Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock new tracks update includes re-recorded classics

22 new songs have been revealed for the upcoming Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock.

What’s notable about this update is that two songs have been re-recorded exclusively for the game, with No More Mr. Nice Guy” by Alice Cooper and “Cherry Bomb” by The Runaways being the tracks in question. Unlike some rockstars in the past, Alice Cooper not only doesn’t have a problem with Guitar Hero, but seems to revel in the fact about being featured in the upcoming Warriors of Rock:

songwriters and rock legends Alice Cooper and The Runaways went back into the studio to re-record “No More Mr. Nice Guy” and “Cherry Bomb,” respectively, for fans to rock out to when the game releases this September.

“I AM a Warrior of Rock! Younger fans getting exposed to true classic rock songs is one of my personal crusades. The new audience listening to the classic songs of today, like ‘No More Mr. Nice Guy,’ will hopefully be inspired to write the classic songs of tomorrow.”

Below is the list of new songs that will be on what is to be the the largest on-disc set list ever in a Guitar Hero game

Alice Cooper – “No More Mr. Nice Guy”
Alter Bridge – “Ties That Bind”
Atreyu – “Ravenous”
Bad Brains – “Re-Ignition (Live)”
Blue Oyster Cult – “Burning For You”
Bush – “Machinehead”

Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online Revealed

With all the talk about Street Fighter X Namco and Namco X Street Fighter, almost lost in the shuffle was news about Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike Online.

Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike is regarded by many fighting purists as the best 2D fighting game,is getting a new lease of life thanks to Super Street Fighter IV producer Yoshinori Ono deciding it’s time for, somewhat the most overlooked (at least to casual players), Street Fighter game to be re-introduced.

While it must be good news for fans of 3rd Strike to hear about being able to take their skills online, they will be fustrated with anxiousness due to the lack of details that Ono has announced. We don’t know what platform it will be on, when it will likely to be released or anything else. With that said, it’s most likely heading to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 via their digital stores and that Ono is suggesting fans to “go to Capcom Unity and tell Seth Killian” what they would like to see in the game. Personally I would like to see a ‘World Tour’ mode that was present in Street Fighter Alpha 3 and more characters.

In the meantime, if you’re able to access 3rd Strike anywhere, I’d advise to do so and brush up on your skills Unless you plan on being mere cannon fodder to guys like Justin Wong and Diego “the Beast” Umehara.

SouthPeak’s Legal Troubles Heating Up

The epic battle between game publisher SouthPeak and distribution partner CDV has taken a number of turns in the past, but today the outlook for SouthPeak begins to look especially grim.

Here’s some history between the two to bring you all up to date.

CDV is a German distributor of SouthPeak titles, which claimed last year that SouthPeak had induced copyright infringement and breach of contract. A UK court ruling found in favour of CDV to the princely sum of of $3.4 million. Southpeak soon responded by purchasing development studio IRP which was owed money by CDV. Then, claiming that CDV now owed them $6 million, SouthPeak filed a countersuit. Outraged with this move, CDV filed for insolvency (similar to bankruptcy) in April 2010, citing debt caused by the original SouthPeak copyright infringement case.

And now back to present day. Due to lack of payment the UK courts have taken decisive action. The consequences to SouthPeak could be devastating. According to UK media reports, High Court Enforcement Officers drove all the way to SouthPeak’s warehouse this morning and packed up 40,000 units of software to pretty much be sold at auction. We estimated the average retail value of this product to come up to $1.6 million. When one considers that SouthPeak only made a $192,000 profit in Q3 of this year, you begin to understand the potential financial trouble they’re facing. It’s also true that SouthPeak is no stranger to legal trouble. In the past year they’ve been sued by Paradox Interactive and TimeGate.

Pokémon Black and White Feature Upadate… Again

gampokemonblackandwhitechat530

Recent scans from Japan’s favourite gaming magazine have revealed a few new-comers to the franchise. One of these new features is the ‘pass by’ mode which is becoming increasingly popular in Japanese handheld RPGs. When Pokémon Black and White players with dormant DS’s come into proximity with each other, their handhelds will automatically connect, providing both players with nice little unannounced bonuses.

Another, slightly more ambitious feature, is a video chat function that can players unlock while playing through the game’s campaign. After gaining access to the ‘Live Caster’ tool, two players using a DSi or 3DS can set up a video chat over Nintendo Wi-Fi. The tool also lets up to four players perform video chats over local wireless connections.

Kinect Claims Two Active Player Limit?

During E3, PrimeSense, the company behind the up and coming Kinect , said that the system could only handle a maximum of two active players at a time. PrimeSense couldn’t confirm at the time that Kinect could only calculate two players, and Microsoft didn’t comment further when asked, but leaked Kinect technical specifications from various UK retailers seemed to match up with this recent speculation. The technical specifications claim that the Kinect camera can recognize any number of human bodies, but can only calculate the movement and actions of two people at a time.

Other specs have the camera pulling in a video view with a 640×480 resolution at 30fps, and a rather interesting echo cancellation system in the mic that will allow voice chat directly through Kinect. Other information also explains what the Xbox 360 will need 175 MB of memory for system drivers and an open USB port to hook up the device.
