Shenmue Collection Finally Announced! Coming to PC, PS4 and Xbox One!
Finally, after all the years of rumours, trade marking and silence, Sega have finally made the decision to announce that they are remastering the two original Shenmue games for modern day consoles and they will launch this year! I’ve been covering rumours of this collection alone on Push-Start since 2014, but the Shenmue Collection rumours surfaced way before that, perhaps as long back as 2012, so to say that this announcement is a long-time coming, is a massive understatement.
One of the many concerns for the delay of the announcement, were the clunky gameplay mechanics of the original games and how they would fair in the modern day, which is a very valid concern, because if you played the games on the Dreamcast or original Xbox recently, you will likely find that the gameplay hasn’t aged all that well. However, Sega have addressed those concerns by bringing the players a choice of a modern or classic control schemes.
Each of the two games in the Shenmue Collection will have “fully scalable screen resolution”, an updated user interface and the choice of either the original Japanese or English voiceovers. PC players will also have access to graphic options to fine tune the game how they please.
The Shenmue series is one of my all-time favourite games and up until now, it’s been a crime that fans haven’t been able to conclude this saga, so it’s awesome news that long-standing fans finally get that opportunity (especially with Shenmue 3 and beyond on the horizon), not to mention welcoming in new fans to the series.
While the Shenmue Collection doesn’t have a solid release date as of yet, other than a 2018 release, we do know that it will release in both physical and digital form for PC, PS4 and Xbox One. Here’s hoping that we get some form of collector’s or special edition. As always, we’ll update you as and when we get more news, especially on that release date. In the meantime, check out the new screenshots below. Let the hunt for sailors and folk-lift truck racing commence!
