First Pictures of Naomi Watts as Princess Di in Caught in Flight
Stepping into the role of Princess Di, in the biopic which mainly depicts the last 2 years of Diana’s life, is Naomi Watts who has now begun filming for Caught in Flight. Below are some of the first pictures of Watts after her transformation into the late member of British Royalty whilst she films scenes in Croatia, in which she is wearing a prosthetic nose.
Watts stepped up to the role after Jessica Chastain (The Help) dropped out. She is best known for her roles in Mulholland Drive, King Kong and The Ring and she said of being given the opportunity of playing Diana:
“It is such an honour to be able to play this iconic role – Princess Diana was loved across the world, and I look forward to rising to the challenge of playing her on screen.”
The movie, scheduled for release in 2013, will be directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel (Downfall, The Invasion) and will explore important aspects of Diana’s life including her humanitarian work and her alleged secret affair with heart surgeon Dr Hasnat Khan, and later her relationship with Dodi Fayed. The film will be produced by Ecosse Films, who also produced the John Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy.
A completely separate biopic is also in the works which will be produced by Stephen Evans and is rumoured to have both Charlize Theron and Carey Mulligan lined up as potential ‘Dianas, and this poses the question: is the public really still so intrigued about Diana’s life that they will still pay to go and see a biopic about the late Princess, or has society transferred their fascination to the modern royalty of today? If so, whether either of the films will only drag back up all over the country the gloom and sadness that surrounded her death still remains to be seen.
